ABOUT MITBC

The Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center is a sub-regional library serving the blind and physically handicapped in all or part of 55 counties in central Illinois. It was formed in 1996 by a reorganization of the Heart of Illinois Talking Book Center (Pekin) and the River Road Talking Book Service (Quincy). The Center is part of a state network administered by the Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State, and a national network under the administration of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS),  a division of the Library of Congress. The Center is locally administered by the Alliance Library System (ALS).

The Talking Book program is a tax-supported program that provides free loan of books and magazines on cassette or in Braille for those individuals who have difficulty reading standard print due to a vision problem, holding a book or turning its pages due to a physical problem, or have certain reading disabilities.  For detailed requirements, check the NLS eligibility requirements.  Institutions that serve individuals with those disabilities are also eligible for service.  Necessary playback equipment is loaned free of charge to registered patrons.
